my approach to the craft
I’ve been a writer for as long as I can remember. From the very first time I held a pencil, learning the shapes and angles of each letter along those dotted lines in school, I was hooked. I was also a voracious reader, and I quickly developed a discerning eye for what I did and didn’t like. I was fascinated by what makes certain kinds of writing stand out, evoke emotion, and leave a mark on a reader. By the time I was eight, I was writing my own epic, full-length novels (I’m only slightly kidding) about horses, magic, the mystery of long-lost siblings, and other things of which I knew very little about. (My parents hold any and all publication rights.)
Fast-forward many years, and this beautiful art form now gets to be a center point of my daily work. I discovered that I loved editing while I was in college, and friends would ask me to read through their assignments and give them pointers on how to improve them. There’s something incredibly rewarding about seeing a person’s vision mapped out on a page, and working together with them to usher it into its highest potential.
To me, writing is an incredibly powerful tool. It can be used to inform and to educate, to evoke and provoke. It can help us connect across unimaginable divides, and it can also drive us apart. My fascination with writing goes hand-in-hand with my obsession with linguistics, and all of the ways in which we as humans have learned—and tried, and failed brilliantly and succeeded gloriously—to communicate across and beyond time.
my work
I now have over 13 years of experience as a freelance writer and editor (not counting my early days as editor-of-friends’-assignments). During this time I’ve worked on a wide range of projects, from op-eds and blog posts to UN research reports and college textbooks. I’ve worked with organizations all over the world, including UNWomen, UNICEF, the GBV AoR, Boundless Learning, Soulforce, HIAS, and VOICE, to name a few. Through each and every project, I’ve worked closely with my clients to bring their finished vision to life.
I’m available for research projects, copywriting, content & copyediting, and personal or organizational writing projects. I also work with individuals as a writing coach to support people in bringing their writing projects and passions to fruition. When forced to choose, I prefer the Oxford comma, but I don't believe it's a binary.
I continue to adore writing in all its forms, and prioritizing time for my own creative writing—outside of any and all paid work—is something I hold sacred and essential.
